Bird's Nest Blues - Story

by Karrkeis
(Charleston, SC, USA)

My washer and dryer are out in a small shed under my car port. It doesn't leak, but there's a crawl space above the cinder blocks and below the ceiling. In other words, it's not a secure shed...

On my pegboard in the laundry room, I have a plastic bag to hold my dryer lint. I went to do some laundry today, and I noticed that my lint bag had been altered. A bunch of pine straw had been added and fashioned into a bird's nest. Inside the nest, are two speckled bird eggs. I have no idea how long they've been there and I fear the nest has been abandoned. I hope not...

The situation made me think about all our expectations and dashed attempts. Those two eggs represent unfulfilled dreams. I don't know what happened to their parents, but the eggs remain as a reminder of how fragile life is. Enjoy today, your health, and all that abounds!

Returning happiness
by: Carrie_Keis

I can relate to your story. Every year for several years, a little momma and poppa bird built a nest in the top corner of my front porch. Every year, we'd gather at the front window and watch them nurture their little hopefuls. Finally, one day we'd hear the little high pitched sounds of the little hatchlings chirping away at their new environment. Their parents would come and take turns feeding them and teaching them. You could even watch them get their first lessons in Flight 101. When they were ready, you'd see their parents watching them take their first few solo flights. It was amazing just watching them. Finally, they ventured out on their own. Then it was pure silence until the next spring when their parents or it might have even been them...returned to start the process all over again. This is a story of rebirth and progress and hope.

Thanks for you inspirational story to remind me of how the best things in life are right in front of us all the time. We just have to take the time to notice.

Enjoy Today
by: Fion

Hi Karrkeis, thanks for your contribution! It's so easy to forget, get distracted, or lose sight of how fragile life can be. In the midst of going after our dreams and goals, maybe it's good to remind ourselves to enjoy the fullness of each single day which will never come like this again.
