Cold - Visitor's Poem

by Michelle Davis
(Garland,TX, USA)

The day is cold and life stands still.
As you slowly drift and lose your will.

I sit by your side and hold your hand.
All while waiting for you to stand.

You struggle to live, for her, for me.
You battle for love, or die and be free.

I can not reach you, as you lie unmoving.
This trial and heartache will be my undoing.

How can I watch you, father of mine.
Fall so quickly and leave me behind.

My sorrow abounds, my words have no sound.
I lost you today, without knowing how.

I was not there to tell you goodbye.
To tell you I love you or just ask you why?

You taught me life’s lessons when I was a girl.
Be strong, be patient, find a place in this world.

Be fearless and loving, to yourself be true.
The woman I am, I owe all to you.

My father, my friend, I miss you terribly.
Walking with you, someday I hope to be.
